Documentation of two galleras [cockfight arenas] in Puerto Rico, a practice dating back to Spanish colonial times, with a long history of tug and pull from federal and local rulings. At the time these photos were taken, there were about 83 licensed galleras, estimated to generate an approximate of 65 million dollars.
While cockfighting (proclaimed the "gentleman's sport") may see its last days soon, it's no question that, moral compass aside, Puerto Ricans are put in a predicament of moving on from a practice of colonial roots and being submitted to a neo-colonial act of rulings over the sport with Puerto Ricans having no standing over them.
Shot with 220 black and white film.
